The Pickle Lady of Sanson

Long before there was a shop, Marie Mullins was up before the sun on a Friday morning, loading the car and making the run into Feilding for the farmers' market. That's where most people first met the Pickle Lady, and that's where the reputation got its start — one stall, one table, and a lot of jars.

These days you'll find her on State Highway 1 at Sanson, in a building she and her husband Phil brought back to life and turned into Eclectic Country. It's the sort of stop you drive past a hundred times before you finally pull in, and then wonder why it took you so long.

The preserves are still made the same way — small batches, most of them gluten free, all of them preservative free. Pickles, chutneys, relishes, jams, jellies and sauces. Marie won't put a pot on until she's got the time to do it properly, which is exactly why people keep coming back for the same jar they had last winter.

More than a jar of pickles

The shelves go a good deal wider than the preserves. Marie carries the full Rawleigh's range — the salves, the rubs and the old remedies your grandmother swore by, and she knows what each one is actually for. Ask her.

Alongside that: New Zealand made sheepskin slippers and Ugg boots, merino socks and beanies, leather handbags, native timber boxes and wooden furniture. All of it chosen rather than ordered in by the pallet.
